Photography courses in April/May 2008 The Portraiture course A portraiture course by CiC May/June 2008 Instructor: Thomas Brown Hartwell Language of Instruction: English Date: May 18- June 15 (Sundays and Tuesdays) Time: from 6:00 – 8:00 Location: 20 Ismail Serry St., off El Kasr El Aini, Mounira. Fee: L.E 850 Requirements: Digital or film camera (preferably an SLR) with a medium telephoto lens (in the 100mm range), a basic knowledge of photography and a good working familiarity with your camera. Optional: A tripod and external flash are recommended but not required. Participants are encouraged to bring previous portrait work and a personal goal they wish to achieve in the class. Participants will explore diverse types of portraiture and examine what goes into making a good image by viewing examples from the instructor and other photographers and through critique of class work. The course includes an introduction to studio lighting but mainly focuses on existing light applying simple techniques introduced with hands-on exercises and reinforced by weekly out of class assignments. By seeing light better and manipulating it with minimal equipment, connecting better with their subjects, and applying simple photo editing tools after shooting, photographers will gain more control in creating strong expressive portraits All participants will receive a certificate for attending the course. To register for this course, please pay the required amount to CiC. Deadline is Sunday May 11th at 4 pm. Kindly note that registration is on a first come first serve basis and that space is limited to 10 students. Bio of Instructor Thomas Hartwell is a Cairo-based freelance photographer and teacher. He has spent over 28 years in the Middle East photographing news, features and documentary assignments. His portraits have appeared on the covers and pages of international and regional publications. He has taught at universities and schools in Egypt, Texas and Algeria. Photographic Series Creating a photo series in May/June 2008 Instructor: Rana ElNemr Language of Instruction: English / Arabic Level: Intermediate/ advanced Dates: 26 May-11June (Mondays and Thursdays) Time: from 6:00 – 8:00 Location: 20 Ismail Serry St., off El Kasr El Aini, Mounira. Fee: L.E 800 In this course you learn how to create a photographic series, starting from developing the concept through observation & research. The course will look at identifying the project's aim, the approach, the technical, spatial & time needs, editing the work & exploring various installation, publication or presentation possibilities. Participants should come with an idea in mind, a topic, a theme or a concept they would like to develop their series on. This could be a new idea or a project in its early phases. Participants are required to submit: 1.a short bio or a one-page cv 2.1-4 samples from their photographic work 3.a one-page project description All participants will receive a certificate for attending the course. To register for this course, please pay the required amount to CiC. Deadline is 19th of May at 4 pm. Kindly note that registration is on a first come first serve basis and that space is limited up to 6 persons. Bio of Instructor Rana ElNemr was born in Germany in 1974. She studied photojournalism, advertising and art at the American University in Cairo. Her work addresses topics including public space, urban fabric, class structures, and social change. ElNemr has exhibited in Egypt, Beirut, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Finland, the US among others. The shows include 'Metro' at Cairo's Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art, 'Coastline', in 'Gallery Image' in Aarhaus, Denmark and 'Telekinesis' as part of Lumo -'Us' 7th International Photography Triennial in Finland. In 2003, ElNemr won awards from the Canon Digital Creators Contest in Japan and the Nile Salon Photographic Exhibition in Egypt. In 2005, she received the Grand Prix of the Bamako Biennale, and in 2007 she was nominated for the 'Paul Huf Young Photographer of the Year Award'. Introduction to Photography A 6-week photography course at CiC in May/June '08 Instructor: Aladin Abdel Naby Language of Instruction: English Date: 28th May – 6th July (18 sessions every Saturday, Monday and Wednesday) Time: 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm Location: 7 Ismail Serry St., off Al Kasr al Aini, Mounira. Fee: L.E. 1200 Mandatory Requirements: Digital or Analogue SLR Camera (Please note that all assignments must be submitted in digital format) Optional: Laptop This 6-week photography course is designed to introduce the basics of the art of photography to the novice. The course will cover topics such as film vs. digital, shutter speed and aperture, automatic vs. manual control, depth of field, light sources, principles of composition and the basics of image editing using Photoshop. Participants will be given regular assignments through which they will get hands on experience in applying new skill and techniques. All participants will receive a certificate for attending the course. To register for this course, please pay the required amount to CiC. Deadline is Wednesday 21st May 2008 at 4 pm. Kindly note that registration is on a first come first serve basis and that space is limited to 12. Bio of Instructor Aladin Abdel Naby has been working as a professional photographer since 1981, and in 1986, he joined Reuters News Agency. During his 20 years with Reuters, he covered major stories in Egypt North Africa, Central Africa, the Middle East, the Gulf, Iraq and Iran. His work has been published in international newspapers and magazines including the cover of Newsweek. After his retirement from Reuters in March, 2006, he traveled to Holland to attend the World Press Photo Foundations' (WPPH) "Training of the Trainers" course. Currently, Abdel Naby teaches photography and news-photography, does freelance commercial work and is preparing for an exhibition.
